Initiative Aims to Help Veterans Start Businesses

A new initiative will help veterans returning to the Dallas-Fort Worth area from Afghanistan and Iraq successfully start their own businesses. Jim Reid, president of the nonprofit Momentum Texas Inc., whose mission is "Building Communities and Growing Entrepreneurs," announced the initiative.

McCormick Foundation, Major League Baseball Announce $2.6 Million in Additional Grants for “Welcome Back Veterans”

The McCormick Foundation’s Board of Directors has approved $2.6 million in 2009 grants as part of Welcome Back Veterans, a national public awareness and fundraising initiative to address the mental health and employment needs of America’s veterans and their families. This brings the total amount awarded through Welcome Back Veterans to more than $5.5 million.

Nonprofit offers advice, connections

A nonprofit called The Veterans Corporation held a seminar in New Orleans this week during which it offered veterans suggestions for raising capital, preparing a business plan and otherwise launching a successful business.

While military service fosters some of the same qualities that make a successful entrepreneur, including discipline and organization, returning veterans do not always know how to translate their skills to the civilian business world.
